Cash for Clunkers: Home Appliance Edition
Posted on December 23, 2009 by

You’ve heard of Cash for Clunkers, but now the government is taking it one step further with Cash for Appliances. The name doesn’t quite have the same ring, but it’s a similar program designed to get people to replace their old, energy-guzzling home appliances with new, energy-efficient ones while stimulating the economy at the same time.
$300 million in stimulus funds have been set aside to be used as rebates when people buy new Energy Star-qualified appliances during a specific time frame to be determined by each state. This program is for consumers only, not for appliances used commercially or installed in new construction.
So how much will you get if you get rid of your old, leaky dishwasher in favor of a new Energy Star one? Again, it depends on the state. Each state is given a portion of that $300 million and must decide how it will be divided up among new appliance purchasers. For example, Montana will pay $100 per new refrigerator and washing machine, $70 per freezer and $50 per dishwasher when its Cash for Appliances window opens in April.
California also plans to kick off its program in April and plans to offer $100 for clothes washers, $75 for refrigerators, and $50 for air conditioners.
Use this map to find out when your state will launch its Cash for Appliances program and how much you’ll get for a certain appliance. Some states offer recycling programs for the old appliances — check with your local government to see if your area has one. If not, petitions and letters to the editor are always good ways to get things moving in the right direction. Or, if your old appliance still works reasonably well, consider donating it to a charitable organization.

Cool! I keep fearing my fridge, washer, and dryer are going to crap out all at the same time. If they do, I hope it’s at least during the rebate window! (Or do the appliances have to be in working order when you replace them, as with the cash for clunkers rules? Hmm.)
Yeah, I am very happy to hear about this. I looked it up, and in NY it starts in March, and there bigger rebates for buying fridge/washer/dryer/dishwasher all in a package. I think we’re going to start saving up, and an extra rebate for recycling the old ones. All of those things are on death’s door in our house anyway.
