Tip of the Day – Install a Ceiling Fan

I know design shows are anti-ceiling fan, but a little air circulation goes a long way.

According to Progress Energy:

“Fans used to supplement air conditioning save energy by permitting a higher thermostat setting. Air movement from the fan evaporates moisture on the skin and makes a person feel cooler. With this cooling effect, most people can raise their thermostat three to four degrees and feel just as comfortable. And that can mean savings of around 25 percent on your cooling costs. For every degree you raise the air conditioning thermostat, you can save 7 percent to 10 percent on cooling costs. However, there are no energy savings if you use a ceiling fan and do not raise the air conditioning thermostat.”

Check out Energy Star for efficient models and advice on what to look for in a fan.

  1. I have a fear of ceiling fans. I think it’s because of the wobbly one in my room that was too big for the room. I would have nightmares of it slicing me in my sleep, and I’ve avoided them ever since.

  4. You know after the people from Trading Spaces pack up their cameras and go, the first thing people do is put their ceiling fans back up. They’re good in the winter too if you have high ceilings because they can help push the warm air back down.
