Jump Start to Green – Stop Topping Off
Posted on October 7, 2007 by

According to Jump Start to Green, a certain habit at the gas tank can have a big bad environmental impact.
Apparently the fumes from the topped off gas go directly into the ozone.
The EPA says that when you add that extra bit of gas to your tank after the pump clicks off, you may also be paying for gas that gets returned to the pump through the pumps vapor recovery system. This can damage the pump’s vapor recovery system, increasing the pollution the pump releases. The EPA also says that the extra gas can evaporate in your vehicle’s vapor collection system, causing your car to operate poorly and give off higher emissions.
So when the pump clicks off, stop filling your tank. It’s better for the environment, the pump, your car, and your wallet.

it’s frustrating in nj bc we have our gas pumped for us and they always top it off. I think the gas station owners encourage the attendants to do it. I like not having to get out of the car when it is cold/raining/snowing, but I don’t like not having control over it.
