Regift

Last year you got a lovely set of champagne glasses from your Aunt Ida. Unfortunately, you never drink champagne, so they’re still in the box a year later. Here’s some tips for passing them on.
Regift! It’s okay. If you won’t use something, but you know someone who will, re-wrap the gift and pass it on. It’s recycling. Just do it carefully.
Make sure those champagne glasses from Aunt Ida aren’t going to anyone Aunt Ida is likely to drink champagne with (obviously).
Don’t give Aunt Ida’s champagne glasses to your cousin, Don, who only drinks Bud Light. Regift items that are appropriate to the recipient. If you happened to get a gift that no one will want, donate it.
Carefully inspect the gift before you pass it on. Make sure Aunt Ida didn’t slip a little note in the bottom of the box. Check that there aren’t price stickers on the glasses, etc.
Add something new to the gift. Put the champagne glasses in a (regifted) basket with a bottle of organic sparkling wine or some fair trade chocolates.
Or make a joke out of it. Agree to regift with your friends. Have a holiday party where everyone brings a regifted item to exchange.
Regifting is a great way to match the right gift to the right person if things didn’t quite work out for you the first time around.
Are you a regifter? Do you have any regifting tips, tricks, or horror stories?

[...] if you do end up with some things you don’t need, don’t be afraid to re-gift what you won’t [...]
I think that the stigma comes from the idea that “oh, you didn’t have time to shop for me, so you just gave me a hand-me-down.” Your idea of not letting that be the only gift is a great one, and I just want to add that honesty is really the best policy. Just tell the person it’s a regift.
I regift often, because it seems like every older woman who doesn’t know me that well gets me gifts that are not my style, but that my best friend would love.
I also think that if you are overwhelmed with the gifts you’ve received, regifting is a great way to spread the wealth and keep your own life simple.
