Greener Holiday Gifts Guide – Gifts for Kids

Holiday shopping for kids can be so much fun, but with all the lead warnings and safety recalls, it can also be a little daunting.  And with all the plastic and packaging that go along with kids’ toys, it can be very wasteful too.  Here are a few low plastic/low waste gift ideas that will make you feel good about what you give to your little loved ones.

I LOVE Oompa toys (and am not affiliated with them in any way), and I will be so sad when my niece and nephew outgrow their age range.

Check out the Organic Sheep Knit Toy above.

You can avoid plastic toys with wooden play sets like the veggie set, Anamalz, or a great little goblin pull toy.

Or go with recycled plastic, BPA-free toys like this recycling truck, that comes minimally packaged in a recycled cardboard box.

Check out Etsy for crafts made from recycled materials like these adorable felted baby slippers from Katt Paws (also no affiliation).

And from Magic Cabin (which I am affiliated with, but only because I wish I’d had all their toys when I was a kid) there are some great options for safe, creative and educational play, like  Kraul Science-Craft Kits that let your child build a cable car system for their dolls or a Little Blossom Doll & Doll Kit.

And please consider adding one extra kid to your holiday shopping list, by leaving a toy at your local Toys for Tots drive, shelter, or working with an organization like Children Awaiting Parents to be a secret Santa for a child waiting for a permanent home.

What are you getting for the little ones on your list?

  1. Great list. I second the recommendation for Etsy– so many cool, unique toys. Local craft fairs are often a good place to shop, too.

Tip of the Day

Don’t Buy Conventional Chocolate

Chocolate really is an obsession of mine, and I know I’ve mentioned fair trade chocolate a few times before.  But I think it’s important to buy chocolate from ethical sources, and in light of Valentine’s Day, I think it’s worth mentioning again.
