Junking a Car for Charity

Please welcome today’s guest poster, Daniel Frank.

One of the challenges of being green is that while there are the many obvious tasks to consider, there are also many things that can slip your mind or make for an easy mistake. One of these is how you dispose of an old car. Cars have been green villains for years and while new generations of vehicles have become progressively greener, the old ones are still fairly toxic.

Of course cars are essential for many people, but the day may come when you’ll buy a flashy new electric car, or maybe your old one just no longer goes. The question is: What is the green way to get rid of it? There are many ways — maybe a friend needs a car and would be happy to take yours. Or possibly you could sell it. But what do you do when you don’t want the hassle of selling it and none of your friends want it?

Well, why not give it to charity?

There are several charities who accept car donations and they can help keep your car out of the scrap yard. Normally they either give it to someone in need or they can sell it at a car salvage auction. There are car donation options throughout the U.S. and Canada, and not only do you get to feel green, but you even get a tax deduction.

In the UK, car donation goes a step further. One UK not-for-profit called Giveacar takes donations of cars that are ready to be scrapped and ensures that they sent to environmentally friendly scrap yards.

  1. Wow! I’d never even thought about how to dispose of a dead car. This is great info, Courtney!

  4. you can donate a car or any vehicle through our vehicle donation program, you help provide essential needs to the children who need it the most. Less privileged children deserve every chance in the world to succeed. Children are in need of food and supplies everyday. They get the supplies they need because of the cars that are donated.

Tip of the Day

If It Doesn’t Smell, Don’t Wash It

According to Real Simple, if every American made an effort to launder less — cutting out just one load of laundry a week per household — we’d save enough water to fill seven million swimming pools each year.

So if it looks clean, and it smells clean, call it clean and wear it again. Consider hanging worn clothes out on your clothesline to freshen them up between wearings.
