Have A Green Thanksgiving!

Is it really Thanksgiving already? Boy, this year’s gone by fast. At any rate, Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays because it means family, football, and most importantly, food. Any excuse to stuff my face is welcome in my book.

Here are some ways to enjoy your Turkey Day responsibly:

- If you’re doing the traditional turkey dinner, consider getting an heirloom turkey. Unlike most turkeys you find in the grocery store, heirloom turkeys haven’t been injected with substances to make their breasts grow so big and so fast that they can’t walk. Supposedly heirloom turkeys taste better, too. Or, if you’re going meat-free, go for some tofurkey.

- Hit up your local farmer’s market or even your own garden for veggies. Locally-grown fresh produce is always delicious. If you’re using organic food for your feast, that’s even better.

- When you’re shopping for food, look for things that use as little packaging as possible.

- For table decorations, consider using colorful gourds or fallen leaves from your backyard rather than buying decor.

- One cool idea is to use food to contain other food, cutting down on dishes to wash. For example, you could put stuffing in miniature pumpkins instead of bowls. How cute!

- We all love leftovers, but for scraps that aren’t worth saving in the fridge, compost them. Better yet, don’t go overboard with the food preparation. Yes, Thanksgiving is all about having a feast, but if you know the brussels sprouts are going to go untouched on the table and no one’s going to eat them for leftovers, don’t make them. You could also donate extra food to a food bank or homeless shelter.

- It’s tempting to pull out the paper plates and cups if you have a big crowd coming over, but it’s greener and cheaper to use washable dinnerware. Plus, it’s nicer, and Thanksgiving is a perfect time to use your good stuff. If you must use the plastic stuff, rinse it off and recycle it when you’re done.

- If you’re traveling for the holiday, remember the tips for driving efficiently: Make sure your car is in good shape, keep your tires properly inflated, and carpool when possible. If you’re flying, consider buying a carbon offset to counteract the effects of your trip.

- If it’s nice outside, open some windows to keep the place cool rather than turning on the A/C.

- Above all, have fun! We Greenists are so thankful for all our readers and writers, and if that’s not a reason to celebrate, I don’t know what is. Happy Thanksgiving!
