1. Give It A Try – No Poo, Take 2

About a month ago, I attempted to give up shampoo in favor of baking soda and apple cider vinegar, but I wasn’t impressed with the results.  A few weeks ago I read about going “no poo” by using conditioner only, so I tested it out.  Read more…

  2. Eat In, Don’t Take Out.

We all have nights where we’re not up to cooking dinner. The idea of cutting and chopping and doing dishes is completely undesirable and we just want someone to do the work for us.

Well, it’s no secret that I have a sweet tooth and love a good sugary splurge every once and awhile. But I’m also health conscious, and concerned about the effects of too much processed sugar on my body.

My rule is if it’s sweet, it has to be worth it. Green Tea Ginger Ice Cream – worth it. Newman-O’s – worth it. Chocolate in any form – worth it. Sugar or honey in my morning cup of tea – not worth it. Read more…

  5. Tip of the Day – Reuse Your Baggies

    Posted on by Allie

Unless you’re using them to store raw meat, you can probably get a few uses out of one plastic bag. Wash it out with water and a little soap and hang it up to dry.

Give this Countertop Bag Dryer a try. It’s made from sustainably harvested birch and ash woods, and will help keep your bags open so they’ll dry quickly.

rBGH, or recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone is a synthetic form of growth hormone injected into cows to increase growth rates and milk production. Manufactured by Monsanto, rBGH was introduced to the market in 1993 under the product name Posilac. rBGH is also referred to as rBST (recombinant Bovine Somatotropin). Read more…

  8. Reed’s Green Tea Ginger Ice Cream

Reed’s is known for their high quality natural ginger beer, but now they’re branching out into ice cream.  And thank goodness they are.  This ice cream is excellent.

The Green Tea Ginger Ice Cream is smooth and rich with a mellow tea flavor and a kick of crystallized ginger candy.  It isn’t too sweet, and the recommended serving size (1/4 of the container) is really satisfying.  I’m into small, high quality indulgences (rather than junk food), and this is a good indulgence.

The milk is rBGH free, and the dairy farm it comes from is working toward their organic certification.

Reeds is committed to using environmentally friendly processes and packaging, and is passionate about the health benefits of ginger.

Reed’s passion for ginger comes from its incredible flavor and health giving properties. Ginger is traditionally used to improve digestion, cure motion and morning sickness and for general health. The latest research is showing ginger to be anti-cancer, to lower cholesterol, and in Europe it is used as an arthritis medicine.

I wonder if the cholesterol lowering effects of ginger cancel out the heavy cream?  Probably not.  But, if you’re going to eat ice cream, you might as well get the good stuff, and this is the best of the best.

I will warn you though, if you’re sensitive to caffeine, be careful when you eat it.  I had some after dinner and I was wired on green tea all night.

Maybe this is a breakfast ice cream.  Hmm. . .

As Latin American rain forests are cleared for livestock fields, vampire bats attack cattle. Really.

My sunscreen article was included in this week’s Carnival of the Green!

Help choose the World’s Cutest Animal. It probably won’t be a vampire bat.

Hurricane Dean hits the Yucatan Peninsula as a category 5.

Darker fruits may help fight cancer.

Tip of the Day

Bunnies Don’t Like Spicy Food

I promise to do a real garden update next week.  Well, I don’t promise, but I’ll try to.  In the meantime, I will give you a quick idea of what’s going on.  Bunnies.  Eating.  Everything.

“But, Allie,” you say, “don’t you have a big, hulking, wolf-like dog?  Doesn’t he scare off the bunnies?”
