A/V Fridays – DIY Wind Turbine

Posted on January 16, 2009 by Allie

Of course, any time someone says PVC, I cringe, but still, this is pretty freaking cool.  This guy is like an eco-friendly MacGiver.  The last two minutes or is just footage of the turbine spinning, so feel free to skip that, but the beginning is really interesting.  Part 2 (adding the generator) is here if you’re interested.

I’m obsessed with the idea of home wind power at the moment.  We don’t get a lot of sun around here, but we get the kind of wind that makes the windows rattle and gives the feeling that we might end up in Oz. I need to check local regulations to see if turbines are allowed here.

  1. I’m interested in at home wind power too. When I had a house, we tried to get neighborhood support to buy one big enough to power the subdivision, but sadly we seemed to be the only ones to cared. My electric bills were $800-900/mo. Yes it was a huge house, but still, $900/mo???? We use the “green” energy company, but a wind turbine in the neighborhood would have made so much more sense.
